Stalin Lays Foundation for ₹668 Cr Police Quarters & New Coimbatore Prison

On behalf of the Police Department, residential quarters for police personnel estimated at ₹457.14 crore, and on behalf of the Prisons and Correctional Services Department, the new Coimbatore Central Prison buildings to be constructed at an estimated ₹211.57 crore were inaugurated with foundation stones laid by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M.K. Stalin.

Today (19.05.2025), at the Chief Secretariat, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M.K. Stalin, laid the foundation stone for 1118 police quarters to be constructed at a cost of ₹457 crore and 14 lakh rupees under the Police Department, and for the Coimbatore Central Prison buildings to be constructed at a cost of ₹211 crore and 57 lakh rupees.

To support the vital responsibilities of the police department—which works to maintain law and order and protect public safety—the government has been implementing various schemes, including construction of new police stations, residential quarters for police, housing under the “Ungal Saandha Illam” (Your Dream Home) scheme for police personnel, provision of advanced security vehicles, and development of the infrastructure of the police department.

From 2021 to date, this government has so far spent ₹509.49 crore to construct 3051 police quarters; ₹59.75 crore for 51 police station buildings; ₹122.40 crore for 18 other police department buildings; and ₹55.19 crore under the “Ungal Saandha Illam” scheme to complete 253 residential units—all of which have been completed and inaugurated.

Police Department

At Thousand Lights in Chennai, on the site known as the Mansion Site, 896 residential quarters for police and fire service personnel are to be constructed at a cost of ₹380 crore and 98 lakh rupees. In Coimbatore district – Sulur, 222 police quarters are to be built at a cost of ₹76 crore and 15 lakh rupees. Thus, in total, 1118 police residential quarters are to be constructed at a cost of ₹457 crore and 14 lakh rupees. The foundation stone for this was laid by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Prisons and Correctional Services Department

Due to space constraints at the present Coimbatore Central Prison, it is being relocated to the Pillichi area in Coimbatore’s suburban region. As part of the first phase, construction at a cost of ₹211 crore and 57 lakh rupees will include a male prison, 111 residential quarters for prison guards, a concrete compound wall, and barricade structures. The foundation stone for this was laid by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
