Indian Railways Launches ‘Swarail’ App to Simplify Passenger Services
Indian Railways has introduced a new mobile application called ‘Swarail,’ developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and launched through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). This app aims to offer passengers a more modern, unified, and user-friendly way to access railway services.
Though quietly released a few months ago, Swarail is being called a “super app” because it combines nearly all services previously available on different IRCTC platforms into one convenient app. It is an upgrade over the older IRCTC Rail Connect app, featuring a more modern design and several new features.
The app is available for free on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Users can sign in with their existing IRCTC Rail Connect accounts or create new ones to start using the app, which is currently in its beta version.
One of Swarail’s main features is ticket booking. Passengers can easily book reserved, unreserved, and platform tickets without the hassle of long queues. To book, users simply select the type of ticket, enter journey details such as origin, destination, travel date, and class, and tap ‘Search.’ The app then displays available trains similar to the IRCTC website.
Swarail is more than just a ticket booking app. Its upgraded interface allows quick and easy access to many services with fewer taps. It also supports biometric login—Face ID for iPhones and fingerprint sensors for Android phones—making the sign-in process faster and secure.
From the home screen, users can check train schedules, track train movements, view PNR status, find coach positions, order onboard food, request help from railway officials, provide feedback, and even apply for ticket refunds—all in one place. This avoids the need to switch between multiple apps or deal with complicated menus.
Frequent travelers will find the “My Bookings” section especially useful as it shows all past and upcoming train bookings in one simple view, making it easier to manage their trips.
A standout feature of the app is “Large Shipment Services,” designed for passengers who need to transport bulky luggage or shipments. By activating this option in the app’s menu, users gain access to tools like shipment planning, tracking, freight calculators, and information on freight terminals and routes. This makes sending large packages more convenient than before.
Overall, Swarail aims to provide Indian Railways passengers with a seamless and modern travel experience by combining essential services into a single, easy-to-use app.
