Pakistan Promotes Army Chief Asim Munir to Field Marshal Rank

The Pakistan government has promoted Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir to the prestigious rank of Field Marshal. This rare elevation comes following what the government describes as his “successful leadership” during a recent cross-border clash with India.

The decision was approved by the federal cabinet under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, making General Munir only the second officer in Pakistan’s history to be awarded the five-star military rank.

In an official statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said, “The Pakistan government has approved the promotion of General Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military) to the rank of Field Marshal for ensuring national security and defeating the enemy with strategic brilliance and courageous leadership.”

The statement further praised Munir’s leadership, highlighting his role in directing the military’s strategy and coordinating operations across all armed forces. “He led with exemplary courage and ensured a unified war strategy during a critical time,” it added.

General Munir has been at the center of attention in Pakistan’s civil-military landscape, not only for his military command but also for his controversial rhetoric, particularly his anti-India and anti-Hindu remarks. In one of his recent speeches delivered days before the Pahalgam terror attack, Munir referred to Kashmir as Pakistan’s “jugular vein.” The Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians, prompted India to launch Operation Sindoor in retaliation. Munir is said to have led Pakistan’s military response during this confrontation.

Reacting to the promotion, General Munir stated through the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), “This is not a personal achievement but a tribute to the armed forces and the people of Pakistan.”

What is the Rank of Field Marshal?

The title of Field Marshal is the highest military rank in Pakistan and is rarely conferred. It carries no statutory powers or extra pay and is mostly honorary, reserved for military leaders who demonstrate exceptional service during times of national crisis.

General Mohammad Ayub Khan was the first and only other Pakistani officer to be promoted to Field Marshal. He bestowed the rank upon himself in 1959 after coming to power through a military coup and later served as President until 1969.

In global military traditions, the rank of Field Marshal is equivalent to Admiral of the Fleet in the Navy and Marshal of the Air Force in the Air Force. India has conferred this rank on only a few of its most distinguished officers, including Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, and Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh.

General Munir assumed command of the Pakistan Army in November 2022. His elevation to Field Marshal reflects the Pakistani government’s endorsement of his leadership at a time of heightened military and political tension in the region.
