Lee Jae-Myung Inaugurated as South Korea’s 21st President

Seoul – Lee Jae-Myung was formally inaugurated as South Korea’s 21st president on Wednesday, concluding his five-year term’s official commencement earlier in the day. The swearing-in ceremony took place in the National Assembly building, where Lee pledged in a televised address to serve all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations.

A member of the liberal Democratic Party, Lee secured 49.42 percent of the vote in a snap election, defeating his main rival, Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party, by 8.27 percentage points. Lee assumed office immediately, with no transition period, after his predecessor was removed following a failed attempt to impose martial law last December.

Wednesday’s inauguration was a relatively modest affair due to lingering concerns over public health and security. In attendance were the National Assembly Speaker, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, members of the National Election Commission, lawmakers, and cabinet ministers. Before the ceremony, Lee visited the Seoul National Cemetery to pay respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

During his inaugural speech, President Lee emphasized unity and reconciliation. “I will work tirelessly to bridge divides and ensure government policies benefit every Korean, no matter where they live or which candidate they supported,” he declared.

Lee’s victory, coming on the heels of a turbulent political period, signals a shift in public sentiment. Observers note that his prompt inauguration underscores both the urgency of stable leadership and the electorate’s desire to move forward. As he begins his term, Lee faces pressing challenges, including economic inequality, housing affordability, and navigating complex relations with North Korea and key international partners.

Nonetheless, Wednesday’s oath-taking marks a historic moment for South Korea: after an intensely fought campaign, Lee Jae-Myung steps into the presidency determined to fulfill his promise of inclusive governance and national reconciliation.
