Tata Group Pledges ₹1 Crore Aid to Families of Air India Crash Victims
Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran on Thursday announced a compensation of ₹1 crore for the families of each person who lost their life in the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171 in Ahmedabad. The aircraft, en route from Ahmedabad to London, crashed shortly after takeoff, claiming the lives of most of the 242 people onboard.
In addition to the compensation, the Tata Group has committed to covering the medical expenses of the injured, ensuring they receive complete care and support during their recovery.
“No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment,” Chandrasekaran said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured.”
He also announced that the Tata Group would contribute to rebuilding infrastructure damaged in the tragedy, including constructing a new hostel at B.J. Medical College, which suffered damage during the crash.
“We remain steadfast in standing with the affected families and communities during this unimaginable time,” he added.
Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata also expressed sorrow over the incident. “This heart-wrenching incident has brought immense grief to countless families. Our thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones today,” he said, offering heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the bereaved.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, took off from Runway 23 at 1:39 p.m. and issued a “Mayday” distress call moments later. The aircraft lost contact shortly after and crashed just outside the airport boundary, emitting thick plumes of smoke.
The flight was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, with First Officer Clive Kundar as co-pilot. Emergency investigations are ongoing, and authorities are still assessing the total casualties and impact of the disaster.
