Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma Addresses New Civil Service Officers at Induction Programme

Urges them to uphold ethics, service mindset, and Vision 2052 goals

Shillong : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma attended the induction training programme for the 35 newly selected Meghalaya Civil Service (MCS) officers, Batch 2025, held at the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATI) in Shillong.

Congratulating the new recruits, the Chief Minister reminded them of their duty to public service and the importance of working with vision, patience, and a people-centric mindset. He encouraged them to focus on the broader picture while discharging their responsibilities.

“You’re entering a position of authority, but true leadership is rooted in service, not power,” he told them. “Your decisions will directly impact lives. The pen you hold is mightier than the sword—it can deliver justice, resolve grievances, and create meaningful change. Use it wisely.”

CM Sangma emphasized the core values of discipline, integrity, and ethics, urging the officers to remain steadfast in their principles, even in the face of tough decisions. He advised them to approach challenging assignments with optimism, seeing them as opportunities to grow.

Highlighting the state’s long-term vision, he urged the officers to study Meghalaya’s Vision 2052 roadmap, which outlines strategic development goals. One of the document’s ambitions is for Meghalaya to secure a place in the top 10 Indian states in terms of GDP performance.

The Chief Minister also stressed the need for continuous learning. “Your training doesn’t end here—it’s just the beginning. Government schemes evolve, and so should you. Keep learning, stay updated, and always seek ways to make a difference,” he said.

Director General of MATI, R.V. Suchiang, IAS (Retd.), also addressed the gathering, sharing insights on the responsibilities of civil servants. She reminded the officers that ethics and discipline are the cornerstones of effective public service.

“There will always be moments when you must choose between what is easy and what is right,” she said. “Choose wisely. Shortcuts may compromise your credibility.”

Additional Chief Secretary Shakil Ahmed emphasized the importance of strong leadership, effective teamwork, and sound decision-making. “Your success as administrators will hinge on your ability to listen actively, engage constructively, and act with fairness,” he noted.

The induction programme also saw the participation of several senior government officials, including the Commissioner and Secretary of the Personnel Department, the Director General of MATI, and other dignitaries.
