Suryakumar Yadav Undergoes Second Sports Hernia Surgery in Munich
India’s T20I skipper begins recovery after successful procedure, eyes return for Bangladesh series in August
India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has revealed that he is recovering from a sports hernia surgery conducted in Munich, Germany. This marks the second such procedure in less than two years for the prolific middle-order batter.
Suryakumar, who had recently played in IPL 2025 and the Mumbai T20 League, had been vacationing in Europe with his wife Devisha Shetty before heading to Munich for the operation.
“Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back,” he wrote on Instagram.
The 34-year-old had previously undergone surgery for a similar groin-related hernia in January 2024, shortly after recovering from an ankle injury sustained during India’s tour of South Africa in December 2023.
Suryakumar last represented India in the five-match T20I series against England, where he played a pivotal role in India’s 4–1 series win. In the IPL 2025, he amassed 717 runs in 16 innings for the Mumbai Indians, finishing as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer. His consistent middle-order brilliance earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award—marking the highest-ever run tally by a non-opener in a single IPL season.
Though Mumbai Indians did not lift the title, Suryakumar’s form remained a standout. He will now begin rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru in the coming weeks.
It remains uncertain whether he will regain match fitness ahead of India’s three-match T20I series against Bangladesh in late August, followed by an ODI series in the same month—a format he hasn’t played since the 2023 ODI World Cup Final in Ahmedabad.
