UD&PA Minister Convenes Meeting to Address Street Vendor and Roadside Encroachment Issues
Aizawl : Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Minister Pu K. Sapdanga today chaired a meeting to deliberate on issues related to street vendors and the need for better management of roadside encroachments across Aizawl city.
The meeting was convened at the Minister’s office, focusing particularly on the challenges faced in areas like the Tennis Court stretch, where street vendors often cause traffic congestion and create unsafe conditions for pedestrians and motorists alike. The Minister emphasized the need to identify appropriate locations for vendors to operate without disrupting public infrastructure and traffic flow.
A Working Committee has been proposed to address these concerns, with the Municipal Commissioner of Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) serving as Convenor. Members of the committee will include the Aizawl Deputy Commissioner (DC), Superintendent of Police (SP), and Traffic SP. The committee will assess all localities across Aizawl where street vending causes traffic obstructions, with a view to finding systematic and sustainable solutions.
During the meeting, concerns were raised about vendors who regularly set up stalls along roadsides and footpaths, leading to reduced pedestrian access, unsafe traffic conditions, and inconvenience for the public. The gathering also highlighted issues such as littering, road damage, blocked access routes, and potential hazards caused by informal vending zones. The AMC also informed that efforts are ongoing to regulate unauthorized roadside markets in various localities.
Present at the meeting were AMC Mayor Pu Lalrinenga Sailo, Deputy Mayor Pu R. Thanglura, Commissioner of Commerce & Industries Dr. Lalzirmawia Chhangte, UD&PA Secretary Pu Lalmalsawma Pachuau, I&PR Secretary Pi Betsy Zothanpari Sailo, AMC Commissioner Pu Joseph H. Lalramsanga, Aizawl DC Er. Lalhriatpuia, Aizawl SP Pu Rex Zarzoliana Vanchhawng, Sr. SP (Traffic) Pu Ruatsanga Ralte, and representatives from Khatla and Tuikhuahtlang Local Councils.
