‘Janasuraksha Bill Crucial for Internal Security’ – Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis

Maharashtra Special Janasuraksha Bill Passed by Majority in Assembly

CM Fadnavis Responds to Debate on the Bill

Mumbai : The Maharashtra Special Janasuraksha (Public Safety) Bill was passed by a majority vote in the Legislative Assembly. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the bill is critical for the nation’s internal security, specifically aimed at curbing unconstitutional Maoist movements and Naxalite activities. He addressed several concerns raised by members during the debate before the bill was passed.

A special committee comprising members from both Houses was earlier formed under the leadership of Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule to review and suggest provisions for the bill. Based on the committee’s recommendations, CM Fadnavis tabled the final version in the Assembly.

A Law to Ensure a Safe Environment for Citizens

CM Fadnavis emphasized that other Naxal-affected states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh already have similar legislation in place. However, Maharashtra lacked a dedicated law to tackle such threats, forcing law enforcement to rely solely on central laws. The Janasuraksha Bill, he noted, is a non-bailable and preventive legal measure designed to address this gap without infringing on the freedom of expression.

“The primary objective of this law is to act against Naxalites, Maoists, and organizations or individuals that pose a threat to internal security,” Fadnavis stated. “This legislation will allow Maharashtra to act independently without facing the administrative delays and approval hurdles that come with relying only on central laws.”

He clarified that the law is not aimed at curbing civil liberties but ensuring a secure environment for all citizens. The bill’s passage is expected to deal a significant blow to extremist activities in the state by empowering authorities to act swiftly and decisively against entities that endanger public safety.
