Self-Defense and Sewing Training for Girls
‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ Becomes a Model of Women Empowerment
Raipur : Training programs in self-defense and sewing for adolescent girls are becoming strong examples of women empowerment in Chhattisgarh. Through the Department of Women and Child Development, girls are being equipped not only with self-defense skills but also with tools for economic independence, paving the way toward a secure and empowered future.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, the state government is committed to the holistic development of adolescent girls and women. With the guidance of Women and Child Development Minister Smt. Laxmi Rajwade, widespread initiatives are being undertaken across the state to make girls and women empowered, self-reliant, and safe under the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child) scheme.
As part of this effort, adolescent girls under the Berla Project in Bemetara district are being trained in self-defense, while sewing training is being provided under the Bemetara (Rural) Project.
At Government Girls School, Berla, and Government Higher Secondary School, Kusmi, a one-month self-defense training program is being conducted. So far, more than 1,050 girls have benefitted from this initiative. Under the guidance of experienced master trainer Bhanu Pratap Sahu from The War Kai Martial Arts and Self-Defense Academy, the girls are being taught kickboxing, karate, punching, blocking, physical fitness, and practical self-defense techniques. This training is helping build self-confidence, discipline, and a positive mindset among the girls.
In addition, a free sewing training program has been launched at the Beejabhat Karma Bhawan under the Bemetara (Rural) Project as part of the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ scheme. Thirty adolescent girls and women are participating in the one-month course, which is being conducted by master trainer Smt. Yogeshwari Nirmalkar.
During the training, participants are also being informed about various women-centric schemes, including the Noni Suraksha Yojana, Matru Vandana Yojana, Saksham Yojana, and Women’s Loan Schemes. Under the Saksham Yojana, eligible women can access loans ranging from ₹40,000 to ₹2 lakh at a low annual interest rate of 3%.
These skill development efforts are playing a vital role in making young girls and women more resilient, economically empowered, and confident to shape their futures.
