Three-Phase Comprehensive Mobility Plan to Shape Nagpur’s Urban Expansion: CM Devendra Fadnavis
Public Input Invited on Transportation Blueprint; ₹25,567 Crore Draft Plan Aims for Seamless Connectivity
Nagpur – To support the growing expansion of Nagpur city, the government will implement a three-phase Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) that ensures well-integrated and efficient public transport systems across all areas. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that despite improvements in road infrastructure, the increasing number of vehicles and urban spread demand new roads, expanded junctions, pedestrian pathways, bus connectivity to metro stations, and more.
At a meeting held today at Metro Bhavan, CM Fadnavis emphasized that the ₹25,567 crore draft mobility plan should be made more citizen-centric by seeking public feedback. He urged both public representatives and the general public to contribute their suggestions.
The meeting was attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Minister of State for Finance & Planning Adv. Ashish Jaiswal, MP Shyamkumar Barve, MLAs Krishna Khopde, Pravin Datke, Sameer Meghe, Charansingh Thakur, Sanjay Meshram, Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari, City Police Commissioner Dr. Ravindra Kumar Singal, MahaMetro MD Shravan Hardikar, NIT Chairman Sanjay Meena, District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar, ZP CEO Vinayak Mahamuni, and senior MahaMetro and district officials.
Urban Growth and Post-COVID Demands
CM Fadnavis noted that Nagpur’s urban expansion has accelerated post-COVID, with a surge in vehicle registrations. The current road infrastructure is falling short, and newer urban centers are emerging in all directions. MIHAN is witnessing an influx of workers, placing a burden on public transport systems. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized that the implementation of the new plan should be expedited to address these pressures.
Inclusion of Industrial and Energy Zones
Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule highlighted the need for improved connectivity in Koradi, Kamptee, Kanhan, and Khaparkheda, which house energy plants, mines, and growing populations. He suggested that the new plan should include widened roads and connectivity from upcoming metro stations to residential and industrial zones.
Development of Bus Hubs and Non-Metro Areas
Future plans include upgrading Morbhavan and Ganeshpeth bus terminals, and establishing bus hubs at Parsodi, Khairi, Wadi, Kapsi, and Kamptee. There will also be a focus on enhancing bus services in areas not covered by the metro.
CMP: A Long-Term Strategic Document
MahaMetro is developing this new Comprehensive Mobility Plan for Nagpur city and region, as per guidelines from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The CMP is a long-term strategic document that directs urban passenger and freight transport investments toward an integrated, inclusive, and sustainable system.
The first mobility plan for Nagpur was created in 2013 by the Nagpur Improvement Trust. In 2018, MahaMetro updated the plan through surveys and consultations. Given the city’s continued expansion, a fresh version was prepared through consultative meetings led by the Divisional Commissioner of Nagpur, incorporating stakeholder feedback to shape this current comprehensive strategy.
Today’s meeting marked a detailed discussion with elected representatives on the proposed draft.
