Maharashtra’s Chess Prodigy Divya Deshmukh Earns Grandmaster Title, CM Fadnavis Announces State Honour
Nagpur – Maharashtra and Nagpur’s own daughter, chess prodigy Divya Deshmukh, has brought immense pride to the state by winning the World Chess Championship and earning the prestigious Grandmaster title at a young age. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lauded her remarkable achievement and announced that the state government will officially honour her for this historic feat.
Speaking to the media at his official residence, ‘Ramgiri’ in Nagpur, CM Fadnavis praised Divya Deshmukh’s exceptional performance in defeating renowned Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy in the final match of the global championship. He noted that Divya had participated in the tournament for the second time and scaled new heights by clinching the top title.
The Chief Minister emphasized that Divya’s accomplishment at just 19 years old is truly commendable. So far, she has won nearly 35 medals, including 23 golds, in various national and international chess tournaments.
Fadnavis added that the state government, in consultation with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, along with Sports Minister Dattatray Bharne, will soon finalize the details of the formal recognition and felicitation to be extended to Divya Deshmukh.
