ECI Publishes Information Booklet for Vice-Presidential Election
Mumbai – The Election Commission of India (ECI) has published a comprehensive booklet titled “Election to the Office of the Vice-President of India – 2025” providing detailed information regarding the Vice-Presidential election.
Under Article 324 of the Constitution, the Commission is empowered to conduct the election for the office of the Vice-President. As per Article 68(2), if the Vice-President’s post becomes vacant due to death, resignation, removal, or any other reason, the election must be held as soon as possible. According to Article 67, the newly elected Vice-President is entitled to a full term of five years from the date of assuming office.
This election is conducted in accordance with The Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952 and The Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974. Unlike Lok Sabha or State Assembly elections, the Vice-Presidential election differs significantly in terms of electorate, candidate eligibility, voting system, counting procedure, and legal provisions.
To raise public awareness about the election, the booklet published by the Commission provides detailed information on constitutional provisions, the composition of the electoral college, candidate eligibility, key procedural aspects of the election, scheduling of the election program, appointment of the Chief and Assistant Returning Officers, designation of polling places, voting system, counting method, and provisions relating to election disputes.
Additionally, the booklet briefly chronicles all 16 Vice-Presidential elections held between 1952 and 2022. The booklet is available on the official website of the Election Commission of India, the Commission stated in a press release.
