Martyrdom of Shaheed Udham Singh a Timeless Symbol of Patriotism, Courage, and Sacrifice, says CM
Chandigarh, Aug 25– Haryana Chief Minister, Sh. Nayab Singh Saini while paying homage to Shaheed Udham Singh on his martyrdom day, described the revolutionary’s sacrifice as a timeless symbol of patriotism, courage and selflessness in India’s freedom struggle.

A Vow of Vengeance Remembered
Recalling Udham Singh’s act of retribution, Sh. Nayab Singh Saini said the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre had left an indelible impact on the young revolutionary, who was serving water to the crowd on that fateful day. Deeply disturbed, he resolved to avenge the killings. That resolve culminated in the assassination of Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, at Caxton Hall in London on March 13, 1940. Udham Singh was later sentenced to death and hanged at Pentonville Prison on July 31 the same year. Udham Singh’s defiance against the British Empire and his commitment to justice represents an inspiring chapter in our history, he said. He also paid homage to other revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Chandrashekhar Azad and Madan Lal Dhingra, who chose the difficult path of sacrifice to free India from colonial rule.
Government is committed to realizing the dreams of the martyrs
The Chief Minister said that the government is committed to realizing the dreams of the martyrs by ensuring inclusive development and empowering every section of society. He informed that a war memorial is under construction in Ambala to commemorate the heroes of the 1857 uprising. We cannot repay the debt of our martyrs, but we must acknowledge it with gratitude and action, he said.
The Chief Minister further highlighted recent steps taken for the welfare of freedom fighters, noting that the monthly pension for freedom fighters and their widows in Haryana has been increased from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 40,000.

He said the National Commission for Backward Classes has been granted constitutional status. OBCs are also benefitting from reservations in medical education, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas and Sainik Schools.
He added that in Haryana, backward classes have been given 8 percent reservation for BC-A and 5 percent for BC-B in Panchayati Raj institutions, along with 50 percent representation in Panch posts based on population share.
