VinFast Electric Car Manufacturing Plant Inaugurated in Thoothukudi with ₹1,300 Crore Initial Investment
A Major Boost for Tamil Nadu’s Industrial Growth and Youth Employment
Thoothukudi, Aug 2025:Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin today inaugurated VinFast’s state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant at SIPCOT Industrial Park, Silantham, Thoothukudi District. This project, involving an initial investment of ₹1,300 crore, marks a significant milestone in Tamil Nadu’s push towards becoming a global electric vehicle manufacturing hub and aims to create substantial employment opportunities for the youth.

The MoU for this mega project was signed during the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet held in January 2024, in the presence of Chief Minister Stalin. The agreement included a total investment commitment of ₹16,000 crore and the creation of 3,500 direct jobs. Remarkably, within just 18 months of signing the MoU, the first phase of the project has been completed, and production has commenced.
Fast-Track Execution of MoU Commitments
During his address, Chief Minister Stalin emphasized that Tamil Nadu’s swift actions in bringing MoU projects to fruition exemplify the state’s proactive governance and commitment to industrial growth. The VinFast project serves as a prime example of this efficiency, with groundbreaking having taken place in February 2024 and production starting by August 2025.
VinFast, a subsidiary of Vietnam’s renowned Vingroup, has established this ultra-modern EV manufacturing facility with a production capacity of 50,000 electric cars per annum. Situated strategically in Thoothukudi, this plant signifies a major step in decentralizing Tamil Nadu’s industrialization beyond traditional hubs like Chennai and Coimbatore, ensuring balanced economic development across the state.
Driving Employment and Tamil Nadu’s $1 Trillion Economy Vision
This project is set to open new avenues for large-scale employment, particularly for Tamil Nadu’s youth, while bolstering the state’s vision of achieving a $1 trillion economy. The state government, under Chief Minister Stalin’s leadership, has been rolling out a series of special industrial policies and incentives to attract global investments and promote inclusive growth that reaches every district.
