Parents Launch Protest Against BJP’s School Fee Bill; Gets AAP’s Support

  • A large number of parents staged a protest near the Delhi Assembly, demanding withdrawal of the bill and resignation of the Education Minister.
  • “This bill is designed only to benefit private schools and is anti-middle class,” said Saurabh Bhardwaj.
  • “There is no provision for audits in the bill, and a condition requiring 15% of parents to lodge a complaint has been imposed,” he added.
  • “If BJP MLAs vote against AAP’s proposed amendments, it will expose their nexus with private school owners,” Bhardwaj warned.

New Delhi, Aug 2025 : Parents have now taken to the streets in protest against the School Fee Bill introduced by the BJP-led Delhi government in the Assembly. On Tuesday, a massive group of parents gathered near the Delhi Assembly at Chandgi Ram Akhada, vociferously opposing the bill and raising slogans against the BJP government. Holding placards with slogans such as “Roll back the fee hike,” “No to school exploitation,” and “Education is not business,” the protesting parents demanded the immediate withdrawal of the bill and the resignation of Education Minister Ashish Sood. A signature campaign under the banner of “United Parents Voice” was also launched at the site.

The protest by parents received strong support from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Delhi AAP President Saurabh Bhardwaj joined the demonstration and expressed solidarity with the parents’ demands.

Addressing the protesting parents, Bhardwaj said that the BJP government is bringing a law to regulate private school fees without consulting the very parents who will be affected by it. Parents have demanded that the government conduct audits of all private schools. While the BJP claims to have audited every school, Bhardwaj pointed out that the new bill lacks any provision for mandatory audits. Moreover, the bill stipulates that a complaint against a school can only be filed if at least 15% of parents consent. “If a school has 3,000 students, at least 450 parents must sign before any grievance can be officially registered. This condition is impractical and designed to shield school managements,” Bhardwaj stated.

He further questioned how a committee, lacking chartered accountants or audited accounts, could determine the appropriate fee structures for private schools. Bhardwaj argued that a more straightforward approach would have been for the government to audit all 1,677 private schools annually and make the audit reports public. This transparency would help parents understand whether fee increases are justified.

“The BJP’s so-called committees are a facade meant to benefit wealthy private school owners and are directly against the interests of the middle class,” Bhardwaj said.

He also informed that AAP has proposed several amendments to the bill, including removing the requirement of 15% parental consent for lodging complaints against schools. “Now the people of Delhi will keenly watch whether BJP MLAs support or oppose AAP’s amendment proposals in the Assembly. If BJP MLAs vote against these amendments, it will clearly expose their collusion with private school owners,” he remarked.

Bhardwaj concluded by saying that Delhi’s citizens have their eyes on the BJP, and the government’s actions will reveal whether it stands with the people or the profiteering private schools.
