Abhishek Banerjee Demands Dissolution of Lok Sabha Over Alleged Voter List Irregularities
Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday demanded the dissolution of the Lok Sabha and fresh elections, alleging large-scale irregularities in the country’s voter lists.
Speaking at Kolkata airport before leaving for Delhi, Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of benefiting from a “manipulated” voter list and questioned the impartiality of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
“There are multiple voters with the same voter ID number. This is not data from a political party—it comes from the Election Commission itself. Why is the BJP defending the ECI?” he asked, challenging the ruling party to explain the anomalies.
Banerjee stressed that the problem was not confined to Opposition-ruled states. “It cannot be that your voter list is completely clean and Bengal’s is flawed. This is a national problem,” he said, accusing the BJP of selectively targeting certain states.
He demanded that if voter list tampering is proven, the entire Lok Sabha should be dissolved, and all Members of Parliament—including the prime minister and home minister—should resign. “Fresh elections must be held,” he asserted, adding that criminal proceedings should be initiated against the former chief election commissioner if wrongdoing is established.
“The BJP has come to power through vote theft. If needed, I will resign myself. But there must be new elections,” Banerjee declared. He also insisted that any special investigation report (SIR) on the issue should cover the entire country, not just a few states.
Referring to Monday’s protest in Delhi, where MPs from the All India Bloc—including TMC leaders—were detained, Banerjee accused the government of silencing dissent. “If they had honest answers, they would have joined the debate yesterday. Instead, MPs were arbitrarily detained. Women MPs were harassed and dragged to police stations. Our MP Mitali Bagh even fainted,” he alleged.
Banerjee’s comments come amid growing Opposition demands for electoral transparency and renewed scrutiny of the ECI’s role in ensuring free and fair elections.
