UP doubles medical colleges in 8 years, records sharp fall in MMR, IMR: CM

Lucknow, Aug 2025 : Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted in the Assembly that Uttar Pradesh has made a historic leap in healthcare over the past eight years. From just two medical colleges at independence, the number rose to 40 by 2017 — an addition of only 40 in 70 years. In contrast, his government has added 40 more in just eight years, taking the total to over 80, he said.

He added, “Two new AIIMS have been set up in Gorakhpur and Rae Bareli to further strengthen health services. Today, government medical colleges have 6,550 seats, and 31 nursing colleges are operational.”

The Chief Minister pointed out that previous governments did not prioritize the health of the poor, farmers, women, and marginalized communities. He added, “In contrast, the present government has provided annual health insurance coverage of ₹5 lakh to every poor citizen under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, with over 5.34 crore golden cards issued so far.”

He further noted significant improvements in key health indicators: institutional delivery rates have risen from 67.8% to 96.1%, maternal mortality rate (MMR) has dropped from 201 to 141, and infant mortality rate (IMR) has fallen from 43 to 37. Deaths due to encephalitis have declined by 99%, vaccination coverage has reached 99.31%, and the TB eradication campaign is progressing rapidly.
