Pakistan Floods and Landslides Claim Over 340 Lives as Rains Continue

Aug 2025 : The death toll from devastating monsoon-triggered floods and landslides in Pakistan has risen to 340, with officials warning that the number may increase further. According to a BBC report, the worst-hit region remains the mountainous Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the northwest, where most fatalities have been recorded. Disaster management authorities reported that at least 74 homes were damaged, while a rescue operation turned tragic when a helicopter crashed in bad weather, killing all five crew members on board.

Elsewhere, nine people were confirmed dead in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, while five others lost their lives in the Gilgit-Baltistan region. Meteorological officials have cautioned that heavy rainfall will persist until August 21, particularly in the northwest, where several areas have already been declared disaster zones.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur told the BBC that the M-17 helicopter crashed while en route to Bajaur, a region along the Afghan border, due to poor visibility. Meanwhile, Punjab province—home to nearly half of Pakistan’s 255 million people—has recorded 73% more rainfall this monsoon compared to last year, leading to a higher death toll than during the entire previous season.

Between June and September, monsoon rains account for nearly three-quarters of South Asia’s annual rainfall. Landslides and floods are a recurring threat, but this year’s season has been especially destructive, claiming over 300 lives so far and leaving thousands vulnerable as rains show no sign of abating.
