Suryakumar Yadav to Lead India in Asia Cup 2025; Bumrah Returns to T20I Squad

Mumbai Aug 2025 : Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain of India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to begin in the UAE on September 9. Test skipper Shubman Gill will serve as vice-captain, while pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah makes his much-awaited comeback to the T20I squad, bolstering India’s bowling attack.

The squad announcement was made by chief selector Ajit Agarkar during a press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday. Heavy rains in the city delayed the meeting by several hours, as Agarkar could not reach the BCCI headquarters on time. The final decision was taken by the five-member selection committee—Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra and S Sharath—alongside captain Yadav and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.

This year’s tournament will be played in the T20 format and will feature the much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash on September 14. Despite growing calls to boycott matches against Pakistan, the BCCI has clarified that it will honour commitments to the multilateral event.

The selectors have opted for a relatively young squad, with senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja staying away from the T20 format. While names such as Riyan Parag, Rinku Singh and Vaibhav Suryavanshi were speculated upon, the final list reflects a blend of youth and experience under the leadership of the 34-year-old Yadav.

India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad:

Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Verma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (wicketkeeper), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh.

With Bumrah’s return and Yadav’s leadership, India will aim to strike the right balance of power and consistency as they begin their campaign for continental supremacy.

Team Maverick.
