PM Modi Concludes Italy Visit, Wraps Up Five-Nation Diplomatic Tour
New Delhi, May 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday concluded his visit to Italy, bringing to an end his extensive five-nation diplomatic tour aimed at strengthening India’s strategic partnerships, expanding economic cooperation, and deepening engagement with key global powers across Europe and beyond.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the Italy visit as a major success that added “fresh momentum” to the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership and further strengthened bilateral collaboration across several sectors of mutual interest.
Sharing details of the visit, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X that India-Italy relations continue to grow stronger with the successful conclusion of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Italy. He noted that the trip generated significant outcomes and reinforced the expanding strategic partnership between New Delhi and Rome.
Prime Minister Modi’s Italy visit came at a time when both countries have been steadily enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, defence, clean energy, advanced technology, connectivity, manufacturing, and Indo-Pacific affairs. Bilateral relations between India and Italy have gained notable momentum in recent years, particularly after the ties were elevated to the level of a Strategic Partnership during Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to India for the G20 Summit in 2023.
Since then, the two nations have intensified high-level political engagement, institutional coordination, and economic cooperation. Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Meloni have also shared multiple interactions at global summits and international forums, reflecting the growing closeness between the two leaderships.
According to officials, discussions during the Italy leg of the tour focused heavily on enhancing investments, promoting industrial collaboration, strengthening defence manufacturing partnerships, and boosting cooperation in clean energy transition projects.
The two sides also explored opportunities for deeper engagement in emerging sectors such as semiconductors, maritime security, transport infrastructure, food processing, space technology, and innovation-driven industries. Officials indicated that India and Italy are keen to build resilient supply chains and expand collaboration in high-technology sectors.
Apart from bilateral matters, regional and global developments also featured prominently during the discussions. Diplomatic sources said the leaders exchanged views on the Indo-Pacific region, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, global energy concerns, and evolving supply chain challenges amid changing geopolitical conditions.
Italy remains one of India’s important economic partners in Europe, with bilateral trade witnessing consistent growth over recent years. Several Italian companies have strengthened their presence in India across sectors including automobiles, engineering, renewable energy, infrastructure, luxury goods, and fashion.
The Italy visit marked the final phase of Prime Minister Modi’s broader diplomatic outreach, which was designed to consolidate India’s strategic and economic partnerships at a time of significant global geopolitical shifts. The Prime Minister is expected to arrive in New Delhi later on Thursday.
