KKR Stay Alive in IPL 2026 Playoff Race with Four-Wicket Win Over MI
Kolkata, May 2026 : At a packed Eden Gardens on Wednesday night, Kolkata Knight Riders kept their Indian Premier League 2026 playoff hopes alive with a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in Match 65 of the tournament. Chasing a modest but tricky target of 148 on a two-paced surface, KKR rode on composed knocks from Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell to secure an important win with seven balls to spare.
The victory lifted the spirits of the home crowd and ensured that Kolkata remained in contention for a place in the playoffs heading into the final phase of the league stage.

Asked to chase 148, KKR got off to a brisk start despite losing impact substitute Finn Allen early. Allen, who replaced injured Varun Chakravarthy, struck two crisp boundaries off Deepak Chahar in the opening over before dragging the ball onto his stumps. The early wicket, however, did not disturb KKR’s intent.
Ajinkya Rahane and Manish Pandey steadied the innings and looked to counterattack. Jasprit Bumrah produced a tight spell initially, exploiting the difficult batting conditions, but Rahane soon found rhythm with a series of fluent strokes. Both Rahane and Pandey punished loose deliveries to help Kolkata reach 31/1 after four overs.
Mumbai Indians clawed back when Corbin Bosch removed Rahane for 21 off 17 balls in the last over of the Power-play. Bosch cleverly changed his pace and length after being hit for boundaries, forcing Rahane into an outside edge. KKR ended the first six overs at 48/2.
The pressure mounted further when Cameron Green, attempting to flick a delivery from Allah Ghazanfar, mistimed the shot and was caught after scoring only four. At 54/3, Mumbai sensed an opening on a pitch that was becoming increasingly difficult for strokeplay.
Pandey then anchored the innings beautifully while Rovman Powell injected momentum with aggressive hitting in the middle overs. Powell survived an early scare when Deepak Chahar dropped a top-edged chance at fine leg, and the missed opportunity proved costly.
Pandey played the role of stabiliser to perfection, rotating the strike smartly and capitalising on loose balls. He compiled a valuable 45 off 33 deliveries before Bumrah dismissed him with a superb off-cutter that sharply jagged back through the bat-pad gap. It was Bumrah’s first dismissal of Pandey in T20 cricket after a long head-to-head battle.
Even after Pandey’s departure, Powell maintained the pressure on Mumbai’s bowlers. The West Indian power-hitter smashed a towering six over long-on off Ghazanfar and looked set to take the game away completely. However, Bosch produced a sensational diving catch at backward point to dismiss Powell for 40 and briefly revive Mumbai’s hopes.
KKR still needed calm heads in the closing stages, and Rinku Singh provided exactly that. He sealed the chase in the 19th over with a boundary over long-on, sparking celebrations across Eden Gardens.
Earlier, Kolkata’s bowlers had laid the foundation for victory by restricting Mumbai Indians to 147/8 in 20 overs on a difficult batting track.
Mumbai endured a disastrous start as Cameron Green and Saurabh Dubey ripped through the top order. Green removed Naman Dhir for a duck and then produced a stunning over-the-shoulder catch to send back Rohit Sharma for 15.
Dubey further dented Mumbai’s innings by dismissing Suryakumar Yadav for 15 during the Power-play, leaving the visitors struggling at 46/4 after six overs.
A brief rain interruption halted play when Mumbai was 57/4 after eight overs, but the break did little to improve their fortunes. KKR’s experienced spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy tightened the screws in the middle overs.
Narine was particularly economical, finishing with figures of 4-1-13-1, including the wicket of Hardik Pandya, who top-scored with 26. Despite carrying a hairline foot fracture, Varun Chakravarthy bowled with control and discipline, conceding only 28 runs in his four-over spell.
Tilak Varma struggled throughout his innings, managing only 20 off 32 deliveries before falling to Kartik Tyagi’s short-ball trap. Will Jacks was run out for 13 after a mix-up with Bosch as Mumbai continued to lose momentum.
Late resistance from Corbin Bosch and Deepak Chahar helped Mumbai recover slightly. Bosch struck two consecutive sixes in the closing overs to remain unbeaten on 32, guiding Mumbai to 147/8 after they added 52 runs in the final four overs. However, the total eventually proved insufficient against a determined KKR side.
