Vietnamese Vice President Meets Nepal’s Prime Minister Oli, Calls for Stronger Bilateral Ties

Kathmandu, Aug 2025 — On the second day of her official visit to Nepal, Vietnam’s Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan held a meeting with Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at Singha Durbar on Sunday. The discussions, which lasted for about an hour at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, centered on further strengthening cooperation and expanding mutual relations between the two countries.

Prime Minister Oli’s Chief Advisor, Bishnu Prasad Rimal, who was present during the talks, said the two leaders exchanged experiences and explored ways to deepen relations across multiple sectors. “The discussions focused on strengthening government-to-government, business-to-business, and people-to-people ties, as well as expanding cultural and diplomatic relations,” Rimal noted.

Vice President Xuan’s visit comes at a significant moment, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Vietnam. She arrived in Kathmandu on Saturday at the invitation of Nepal’s Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav.

Earlier in the day, Vice President Xuan also held bilateral talks with Vice President Yadav. The two leaders discussed religious and cultural similarities between their countries, as well as the immense potential for religious and cultural tourism. According to Prakash Adhikari, Joint Secretary at Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they also exchanged views on matters of bilateral, regional, and international concern.

Adhikari added that both leaders underscored that Nepal–Vietnam relations are built on friendship, goodwill, and respect for sovereignty, and that the partnership is moving forward with a shared vision on international platforms. On this occasion, both sides also agreed to promote exchange of visits at various levels and ministries.

The two Vice Presidents emphasized opportunities for cooperation in bilateral trade, investment, digital technology, and economic development. Nepal, they said, can learn valuable lessons from Vietnam’s strong economic growth and explore possibilities for attracting investment.

The visit marks the first highest-level visit from Vietnam to Nepal, symbolizing a milestone in the evolving partnership between the two nations. Both Kathmandu and Hanoi hope the momentum from this visit will pave the way for deeper collaboration across political, economic, and cultural spheres.

With Nepal looking to diversify its international partnerships and Vietnam seeking to expand its engagement in South Asia, the visit has been hailed as an opportunity to redefine bilateral ties for the next fifty years.
