GR Colony Struggles to Rebuild After Devastating Floods in Kamareddy

Kamareddy, Aug 2025 : What began as a festive evening of Vinayaka Chaturthi turned into a night of horror for the residents of GR Colony when a sudden cloudburst triggered flash floods that submerged the entire locality. Within minutes, the nearby river swelled and overflowed, sending torrents of water cascading into the colony. The low-lying settlement on Hyderabad Road was swallowed by floodwaters that rose up to six feet, leaving families scrambling for safety.

With little time to react, residents were forced to flee to their rooftops. The powerful current swept away parked cars and invaded all 45 homes in the colony, submerging refrigerators, furniture, electronics, and other household valuables. By Friday, as the floodwaters receded, what remained was a thick blanket of mud, transforming the colony into a scene of devastation.

District officials immediately deployed a joint task force comprising the NDRF, SDRF, police, fire services, and municipal workers to assist in rescue and clean-up operations. Teams worked from morning until night, shoveling mud, clearing debris, and restoring basic access. Despite the support, the task of recovery remains daunting for residents who have lost nearly everything.

“For years we have endured seasonal flooding, but never like this,” said Basa Pundarikaksham, whose house suffered extensive damage. “We are facing losses worth lakhs. Just cleaning alone could cost more than ₹30,000. The government workers are helping, but real relief is still awaited.”

The emotional toll is equally heavy. Pujari Nayalakanti Rajeshwar Sharma, who was preparing to perform Ganesh puja when the waters rushed in, recalled, “We climbed to the roof with the help of rescue teams and escaped, but we lost everything. Today, I have nothing left except a dhoti and a shawl.”

Scenes of despair were visible everywhere in the colony. Dattatreya, another resident, expressed his anguish to his friend Balraj, who was left speechless as he stood before the wreckage of his destroyed home. Once a neighborhood of sturdy two- and three-storey houses, GR Colony is now struggling to rise from a mud-soaked tragedy.

The catastrophe has extended beyond GR Colony, with several other colonies in Kamareddy town suffering similar fates. As families clean their homes with heavy hearts, the colony has become a stark reminder of both the destructive power of nature and the resilience of communities determined to rebuild.
