China’s Military Parade exhibits new weapons in show of ‘strategic ace’ deterrence.
Sept 2025 : China has hosted a massive military parade along Changan Avenue in central Beijing, showcasing the country’s latest and most advanced weapons to commemorate the 80th. anniversary of China’s victory over Japan in World War II.
President Xi Jinping delivered a speech from the Tiananmen rostrum and then inspected the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops from a parade car. It was the third major military parade in Tiananmen Square that Xi is overseeing as president.
World leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim were seated on the rostrum, along with serving and former top officials and generals.
Meanwhile, the ruling independence-leaning DPP condemned Wednesday’s spectacle in Tiananmen Square as an exhibition of Communist Party ambition rather than a commemoration of peace. In a social media post, the DPP’s China affairs department said the Second World War should have taught humanity the lessons of “opposing aggression” and “pursuing peace”, yet Beijing chose instead to showcase the troops and weapons it now uses to intimidate its neighbours. The department accused Beijing of militarism “taken to the extreme” and warned that the PLA’s repeated drills in the Taiwan Strait, South China Sea and East China Sea already posed a serious threat to regional security.
The post also denounced Beijing’s narrative – including its claim to have been the “pillar” of anti-Japanese resistance and efforts to promote a “shared 14-year war of resistance” – as a distortion of history designed to co-opt Taiwanese voices.
While, some of China’s most cutting-edge weaponry have rolled through the heart of Beijing in a massive military parade today. The spectacle marking the 80 years of Chinas victory over Japan in World War II. It will also show just how far the People’s Liberation Army has come in an ambitious and fast-paced modernisation drive.
But not everything could be displayed. Some of the most potent and advanced weapon systems had remained hidden from public view, either because they are still under development, too sensitive to be revealed, or because it is not possible to include them in the parade. Most prominent are two sixth-generation stealth fighter jets – unofficially dubbed the J-36 and J-50 – that drew global attention when they made maiden flights at the end of last year. They have since been spotted in more test flights.
