Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Jannik Sinner to Claim Sixth Major Title and Second US Open Crown
New York, Sept 2025 : Carlos Alcaraz added another glittering chapter to his fast-rising legacy on Sunday by defeating Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to win his second US Open title and sixth Grand Slam overall. The 22-year-old Spaniard, hailed as the new standard-bearer of men’s tennis, needed two hours and 42 minutes to overcome his great rival in their 15th career meeting and third straight Grand Slam final.
The victory not only solidified Alcaraz’s place at the summit of the sport but also elevated him back to the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings. Beginning his 37th week as world number one on Monday, he returns to the position for the first time since September 2023.
A Rivalry Defining an Era
Since the start of 2024, Alcaraz and Sinner have monopolized men’s tennis, claiming each of the last eight majors between them. But it is the Spaniard who has edged ahead in their iconic rivalry. He has now won seven of their last eight encounters, including five finals and two of the three Grand Slam finals contested in 2025.
Alcaraz’s latest triumph also makes him the second-youngest male player in history to capture six major titles, trailing only tennis legends in precocity. Perhaps more remarkably, he has become just the fourth player to win multiple majors on all three surfaces—two on hard, two on clay, and two on grass. He now shares that rarefied space with Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Mats Wilander.
Sinner’s Unfinished Quest
For Sinner, the defeat marked the end of an extraordinary streak. The Italian had won 27 consecutive matches at hard-court majors and was seeking to become only the seventh man in the Open Era to claim three Slam titles in the same year.
His consistency, however, remains historic. By reaching the New York final, the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion became the youngest man in the Open Era to play all four Grand Slam finals in a single season. At Roland Garros, he came within three championship points of victory before Alcaraz rallied to steal the crown in one of the greatest matches of the modern era.
The Match Unfolds
Alcaraz set the tone early. Within four minutes, he had already earned his first break point, and by the ninth minute, he secured a 1-0 advantage with a flurry of dazzling forehands. He engineered a second break for 5-2 and sealed the opening set in just 37 minutes.
Sinner responded with grit in the second. He broke Alcaraz in the fourth game with a clean forehand winner, then held serve with conviction to level the match at one set all. It was the first set Alcaraz had conceded all tournament.
But the Spaniard roared back in the third set, producing some of his most dominant tennis. Racing to a 5-0 lead, he out-hit Sinner 11 winners to one and closed the set swiftly. The Italian looked rattled, unable to stem the onslaught of Alcaraz’s relentless shot-making.
The fourth set was tighter. Sinner fought off two break points in the opening game and held on gamely until the fifth, when Alcaraz finally broke through for a 3-2 lead. From there, he never looked back, maintaining his advantage until clinching the title with a final display of power and precision.
A Night of Delayed Drama
The start of the final was delayed by 30 minutes due to enhanced security measures prompted by former US President Donald Trump’s presence at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The delay meant that when Alcaraz broke Sinner in the very first game, the 23,000-seat arena was still only three-quarters full.
Even as fans streamed in, Alcaraz continued his aggressive tactics, mirroring his fast start at Wimbledon. Though Sinner briefly halted the Spaniard’s momentum in the second set, Alcaraz’s superior shot variety, mental toughness, and explosive movement ultimately dictated the contest.
The Road Ahead
With this triumph, Alcaraz has reaffirmed his dominance in a season where he and Sinner have separated themselves from the rest of the field. While Sinner has proven to be a formidable rival, it is Alcaraz who has consistently delivered in the biggest moments.
As the 2025 season heads toward its final stretch, the sport seems firmly in the hands of two young titans. Yet, with Alcaraz holding a clear edge in their rivalry, the Spaniard’s rise is beginning to echo the dynastic dominance of past legends.
On Sunday night in New York, the message was unmistakable: the era of Carlos Alcaraz is not just beginning—it is already here.
