India’s Medal Hopes Dashed on Day One, Disappointing Shooting Performance in Paris
Paris : The highly anticipated start of the Paris 2024 Olympics brought early disappointment for India as their shooters failed to secure a medal on the first day of competitions. Expectations were high for the Indian shooters, particularly in the 10m air rifle mixed team event. However, both Indian pairs fell short, unable to even qualify for the finals.
In the 10m air rifle mixed team event, Elavenil Valarivan and Sandeep Singh secured the 12th position, while the pair of Ramita Jindal and Arjun Babuta managed a sixth-place finish. Ramita and Arjun scored a combined total of 628.7 marks, while Elavenil and Sandeep scored 626.3 marks, both scores not sufficient to advance to the finals.
The competition was intense, with only the top-4 teams making it to the medal round. The final for this event is set to take place later today, July 27. This setback means India will not be adding to their medal tally on the first day of the games.
Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu holds the record for India by winning a medal on the opening day of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she secured a silver medal. The Indian contingent had hoped to replicate such success in Paris, but today’s shooting results have tempered those aspirations.
As the games continue, Indian athletes and fans alike will be looking forward to upcoming events with renewed hope, aiming to turn the tide and bring home medals in the days to come.
