“Farewell to a Mumbai Icon: Sion Bridge Demolition Prompts Traffic Overhaul for Two Years”

The Central Railways has decided to demolish Mumbai’s iconic Sion Bridge, with the closure set to begin on July 31. As a result, new traffic diversions will be implemented from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2026. The Sion Railway Overbridge, already closed to heavy vehicles due to deterioration, will be taken down to ensure public safety.

Traffic Diversions Advisory:

To manage potential congestion during the demolition, the following traffic diversions have been issued:

  • Southbound Traffic from Dr. BA Road: Vehicles will take a right from Sion Circle-Sion Hospital Junction, then proceed via Sulochana Shetty Road and Kumbharwada Junction.
  • Northbound Traffic from Dr. BA Road: Vehicles will turn left from the Sion Hospital Junction, continuing via Sulochana Shetty Road and Kumbharwada Junction.
  • Traffic from Western Express Highway via Sion Bandra Link Road: Vehicles will turn right from the Dharavi T Junction, then left at Khemkar Chowk, proceed through 60 Feet Road, and use Kumbharwada Bridge.
  • Eastbound Light Vehicles from Sion Bridge: Vehicles will turn right from Pahelwan Naresh Mane Chowk and proceed via Sant Rohidas Road, Ashok Mill Naka, 90 Feet Road, Kumbharwada Junction, Sulochana Shetty Road, and Kumbharwada Bridge.
  • Eastbound Heavy Vehicles from Sion Railway Overbridge: Vehicles will turn right just before Pahelwan Naresh Mane Chowk, and proceed via Dharavi Depot Road, Sion Bandra Link Road, T Junction, Mahim Sion Link Road, Khemkar Chowk, 60 Feet Road, Sulochana Shetty Road, and Dharavi Railway Bridge.
