Sunita Williams Stuck in Space: NASA May Turn to SpaceX for Her Return.

NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have been stranded in space for nearly 51 days due to issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, including thruster malfunctions and a helium leak. Currently aboard the International Space Station, the astronauts are safe, according to NASA. However, it appears that SpaceX may need to step in to facilitate their return. SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, known for its reliable transport of astronauts to and from the space station, may be used as a backup.

Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, highlighted the situation during a press briefing on Thursday, emphasizing the availability of two different systems: Boeing’s Starliner and SpaceX’s Crew Dragon. “Clearly, the backup option is to use a different system,” Stich noted. The Commercial Crew Program funded both SpaceX and Boeing to develop their spacecraft.

The mission initially involved the Boeing Starliner, which was intended to complete an eight-day mission. However, the Starliner has faced several issues, whereas SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, which made its successful debut flight in 2020, has operated smoothly. On the day Williams and Wilmore launched, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk criticized the Starliner’s performance, tweeting about Boeing’s management issues.

Boeing’s Mark Nappy acknowledged on Thursday that the mission was expected to last only eight days but has now extended far beyond that. “We initially anticipated an eight-day mission, but it appears it will take longer,” Nappy admitted. Despite ongoing efforts, the astronauts remain stranded after 51 days.

In response to the prolonged situation, Stitch reassured that NASA always has contingency plans. “NASA is prepared for emergencies and will explore all options, including the possibility of using SpaceX’s Crew Dragon for their return,” he said.
