Jasmine Lamboria and Meenakshi Hooda Strike Gold at World Boxing Championships

Sept 2025 : India concluded its campaign at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool with an impressive haul of four medals, including two golds, as Jasmine Lamboria and Meenakshi Hooda were crowned world champions. Nupur Sheoran secured silver, while Olympian Pooja Rani clinched bronze, according to Olympics.com.

On Saturday, Jasmine Lamboria (women’s 57kg) stunned top seed and Olympic medallist Julia Szeremeta of Poland, winning 4-1 by split decision in the final. Julia, a Paris 2024 Olympic silver medallist, began strongly with sharp counter-attacks. However, Jasmine used her height and reach to dominate from the second round onward. “This feeling is indescribable. I am so happy to be the world champion. After my early exit at Paris 2024, I worked hard on both my physical and mental game. This is the result of a year of relentless effort,” Jasmine said.

Her path to the title was equally commanding. The southpaw registered four consecutive unanimous 5-0 wins, defeating Paris Olympian Omelin Alcala (Venezuela) in the semi-finals, Khumoranobu Mamajonova (Uzbekistan) in the quarter-finals, two-time Olympian Jucilene Romeu (Brazil) and Daria-Olha Hutarina (Ukraine) in earlier rounds.

On Sunday, Meenakshi Hooda (women’s 48kg) added to India’s golden tally, defeating Paris 2024 bronze medallist Nazim Kaizebe 4-1 in the final. With these victories, Jasmine and Meenakshi became the first Indians to win gold under the aegis of World Boxing, the newly formed global governing body of the sport.

India had three finalists in total. Nupur Sheoran (80+kg) narrowly lost 3-2 to Poland’s Agata Kaczmarska, settling for silver. Veteran Olympian Pooja Rani (80kg) bowed out in the semi-finals against England’s Emily Asquith, earning a bronze medal.

In all, 20 Indian boxers competed at the tournament, including Olympic medallists Lovlina Borgohain and Nikhat Zareen, who were making their comebacks after Paris 2024. Borgohain exited in the second round of the women’s 75kg category, while Zareen advanced to the quarter-finals before losing to two-time Olympic silver medallist Buse Naz Cakiroglu (Turkey) in the women’s 51kg division.

India’s four-medal finish marks a strong performance at the Championships, underscoring the nation’s growing depth in women’s boxing and reinforcing its position on the global stage.
