Economic Growth through Amrit Sarovar
Around 650 women gain employment
Raipur, Sept 2025 : The Amrit Sarovar constructed in Gram Panchayat Borinda of Durg district has now become much more than just a water conservation resource — it has emerged as a hub of sustainable livelihood for rural women. Through this pond, 12 women members of the Sheetal Swasthya Group have come together to undertake fish farming. Built under the MGNREGA scheme, this Amrit Sarovar is setting a successful example of making rural communities economically self-reliant. So far, more than 100,000 fish (seeds) have been stocked in the pond, with regular provision of proper feed and seeds to increase production and maintain fish health.
The women of the Sheetal Swasthya Group shared that this initiative is opening up opportunities for a steady income. They now plan to expand the activity to a commercial scale for greater benefits in the future. Chief Executive Officer Shri Bajrang Dubey praised the initiative, stating that Amrit Sarovar is not just a medium for water conservation but also a powerful tool for women’s empowerment and livelihood promotion. The women of Borinda have proved that with the right resources and support, self-employment opportunities in rural areas are immense.
The pond also provides irrigation facilities to about 10–15 acres of farmland, leading to increased production in both Kharif and Rabi crops. It has a storage capacity of 10,000 cubic meters of water. Additionally, around 60 saplings of mango, banyan, peepal, neem, almond, and ashok trees have been planted along the banks, enhancing greenery and benefiting the environment.
So far, 123 Amrit Sarovars have been constructed in the district, out of which livelihood activities have started in 65 ponds, actively involving groups of 10 women each. In total, about 650 women are now benefitting through fish farming. Platforms have also been built near the ponds for drying fish, facilitating processing and marketing. This initiative is not only generating employment for locals but also increasing the revenue of the Gram Panchayat. It has become a positive example for unemployed youth in the village.
