Assam Mourns as Iconic Singer Zubeen Garg Dies in Diving Accident in Singapore

Assam, Sept 2025 : Renowned singer, composer, and cultural icon Zubeen Garg passed away at the age of 52 following a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore on Friday. The news has plunged Assam and the wider music fraternity into mourning.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep grief and confirmed that arrangements are being made to bring Garg’s body back to Assam. “I am in constant touch with His Excellency Dr. Shilpak Ambule, the High Commissioner of India. We are coordinating to ensure that the body of dear Zubeen is returned to Assam as soon as possible. I will update you as soon as the process is complete,” Sarma wrote on Instagram.

According to reports, Garg had traveled to Singapore to participate in the North East Festival. On Thursday night, while diving off the coast, he experienced sudden breathing difficulties. Singapore police divers rescued him and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU. Despite prolonged efforts, doctors were unable to save his life.

Remembering the singer’s unparalleled contributions, Sarma described him as “Assam’s favorite rockstar.” In his heartfelt tribute, he said, “Zubeen’s significance to Assam is beyond words. He left too soon, not at the age to let go. His voice energized people, his music connected directly to the heart and soul. He left a void that will never be filled. Rest in Peace.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also offered his condolences. “Shocked by the sudden demise of Zubeen Garg. His rich contribution to music will be remembered. His songs were popular across all sections of society. Condolences to the family and fans. Om Shanti,” he posted.

Born in Jogijan village, Assam, Zubeen Garg was a prolific artist who recorded thousands of songs in multiple languages, including Assamese, Hindi, and Bengali. With his unique voice and versatility, he became a household name, not just in Assam but across India.

His untimely death leaves behind a legacy of music that will continue to inspire generations. Assam, and indeed the nation, mourns the loss of a voice that was inseparable from its cultural identity.
