Alipore Zoological Garden celebrates the Culmination of its 150th. Year.
Sept 2025 : The culmination ceremony of the 150th Anniversary of the Zoological Garden, Alipore, was celebrated on 24th. September 2025. To commemorate the 150th. anniversary of the Zoological Garden, Alipore, a Special Cover with My Stamp was released in collaboration with India Post.
A prize distribution ceremony was also a part of this celebration, where the winners of the Sit & Draw Competition organised on the occasion of 7th. Zoo Festival 2025 were awarded.

Hon’ble MoS (IC), Department of Forest, Government of West Bengal, Mrs. Birbaha Hansda, Dr. Maria Fernandez, Vice Chairman, WBFDCL, Mr. Debal Roy, Principal Secretary, Department of Forest and PCCF HOFF, Government of West Bengal, Mr. Saurabh Chaudhuri, Member Secretary, West Bengal Zoo Authority, Mr. Supriyo Ghosh, Post Master General (Mails and BD), West Bengal Circle, Mrs. Tripti Sah, CF and Director, Zoological Garden, Alipore, Mr. Atanu Sanyal, Executive Director and Refinery Head, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, graced the occasion.
The 150th. Establishment Day was celebrated on this day (24th. September) last year.
Two new gates on Alipore Road and National Library Avenue were inaugurated. One renovated heritage building with enclosure s having mouse deer, four horned antelope and hog deer and two new enclosures of Bengal fox and leopard cat were also inaugurated in this occasion.
A statue of Rai Bahadur Ram Brahma Sanyal, the first and longest serving Superintendent of Alipore Zoo was unveiled on this occasion. Moreover, a 150 year Memorabilia book “Calcutta Zoo Metamorphosed into Kolkata Zoo” was also published.
Established on September 24, 1875, the zoological garden was originally called The Prince of Wales Zoological Garden. It opened to the general public a year after it was established.
