47g of gold jewellery without BIS hallmark seized in raid

Oct 2025 : Acting on information received regarding violation of Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020, a team of officials from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Mumbai Branch Office, conducted an enforcement raid on 01st October 2025, at a jewellery showroom in Sonapur, Mumbai. During the raid, it was found that the Jewellery outlet had displayed gold jewellery for sale without BIS hallmark. Around 47g of such gold jewellery, without BIS hallmark found during the raid was seized.

The violation, under Section 15(3) and 17(1)(a) of BIS Act 2016, is punishable with imprisonment up to two years or a fine of minimum Rs. 2,00,000 or both as per BIS Act 2016. Action is being initiated to file a case in the court of law for the offence, said an official from the BIS.

The BIS has requested consumers to use BIS CARE App to find out the list of mandatory products which shall be BIS certified and are also to ascertain the genuineness of ISI Mark or Hallmark on the product before making purchase, by visiting BIS website http://www.bis.gov.in.

The BIS has also requested citizens that in case they come across any instance where mandatory products are being sold without BIS certification, or where misuse of ISI Mark or Hallmark on any product is happening, the same may be informed to the Head, MUBO, Western Regional Office, BIS, 5th Floor, CETTM complex, Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, Mumbai – 400076. Such complaints can also be made by E- mail at the address mubo1@bis.gov.in.

As per BIS Act, 2016, No person shall manufacture, import, distribute, sell, hire, lease, store or exhibit for sale any such goods which is covered under Violation of Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020 without BIS hallmark.
