Railway Board has Sanctioned more than Rs. 396 Crores for Doubling of Ranaghat – Bangaon section.
Oct 2025 : Railway Board has sanctioned ₹396.04 crore for Ranaghat – Bangaon doubling work (32.93 km) which will act as impetus for the speedy completion of the project. The doubling work of this section will envisage a total of 9 stations and 2 Limited Height Subways (LHS) one between Ranaghat & Majhergram and another between Majhergram and Gopalnagar.

The doubling of Ranaghat-Bangaon section will enable seamless movement of freight & passengers from erstwhile remote areas of different stations in the section viz. Cooper’s Halt, Naba Raynagar Halt, Gangnapur, Majhergram, Akaipur Halt, Gopalnagar, & Satberia to other part of West Bengal as well as to the other states in the country.
Ranaghat – Bangaon section is a key section of Eastern Railway’s Sealdah division connecting Bangaon Junction Station which is near to the international boarder of Petrapole (Bangladesh) to Ranaghat Junction which is on the Sealdah – Krishnanagar Main Line.
Ranaghat Junction is an important station situated on Sealdah – Krishnanagar – Lalgola Main Line section whereas Bangaon is a Junction station situated at Sealdah / Kolkata – Dum Dum – Bangaon – Petrapole (near Bangladesh border) section. Physically these two stations situated at the remote end of the two districts Nadia & North 24 Parganas which are existingly connected with a Single Line railway network. But with the growing population and requirement of faster logistic as well as passenger movement there will be dire need of faster connectivity. It is of omnipotent importance that Ranaghat Junction is just 43 Kilometres away from Gede Railway Station, which is again the last of the Indian Railway Station. The India-Bangladesh Maitree Express has a technical stoppage at Gede Station before setting of for its journey into the Bangladesh.
Recently AC EMU local trains service has been introduced between Ranaghat & Sealdah via Bangaon (through Ranaghat-Bangaon route) has also enhanced the passenger service in this region and doubling work between Ranaghat & Bangaon will give impetus to the Railway’s endeavour for augmentation of Railway service for the socio-economic development of this region.
The doubling work will help in decongestion of the section keeping in view the present capacity utilisation of the section thereby mobilising both passenger & freight traffic. Once doubling work is completed there will be no detention for crossing of trains like in single line section and speedy movement will be established between Ranaghat & Bangaon. The doubling of this section will also create avenues for additional freight traffic of 0.88 MTPA and services of additional 10 passenger train per day in each directions over this stretch of double line between Ranaghat & Bangaon resulting in additional earning of ₹8.66 crore.
