NITI Aayog Unveils Roadmap to Create 4 Million Jobs in India’s Emerging AI Economy
New Delhi, Oct 2025 : As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to transform global industries, India stands at a pivotal crossroads — facing potential job disruptions but also unprecedented opportunities. According to a new report released by NITI Aayog, India’s technology services sector could see significant job displacement by 2031, but with the right interventions, it could also generate up to four million new jobs within the next five years.
To harness this potential, NITI Aayog has proposed the creation of a National AI Talent Mission, a large-scale, coordinated initiative aimed at positioning India as the AI workforce capital of the world.
The report, titled “Roadmap for Job Creation in the AI Economy,” was launched by B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, in the presence of Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy; Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education; and Debjani Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow, NITI Aayog, along with other dignitaries.
The roadmap explores how AI is reshaping India’s $245 billion technology and customer experience (CX) sectors through the dimensions of work, worker, and workforce. It notes that while roles such as QA engineers and L1 support agents may face automation risks, a parallel rise in AI-first professions — including Ethical AI Specialists, AI Trainers, Sentiment Analysts, and AI DevOps Engineers — could redefine India’s employment landscape.
“India’s strength lies in its people,” Subrahmanyam said during the launch. “With over nine million technology and customer experience professionals and the world’s largest pool of young digital talent, we have both scale and ambition. What we need now is urgency, vision, and coordination.”
Debjani Ghosh emphasised that the balance between job loss and job creation will depend on immediate policy and industry action. “This roadmap provides a clear, actionable path to ensure India becomes the global epicentre of AI talent by 2035,” she said.
The report also calls for stronger synergy between the proposed AI Talent Mission and the ongoing India AI Mission, advocating collaboration between academia, government, and industry. Building robust compute infrastructure, improving data accessibility, and fostering AI research ecosystems are identified as critical enablers.
Ultimately, the report underscores that India’s future in the AI-driven economy depends on decisive, collaborative leadership. With strategic action today, India can not only safeguard its workforce but also lead the world in shaping the ethical, innovative, and inclusive future of AI.
