New Opportunities for Livelihood and Self-Reliance Emerging Through Fish Farming in Rural Areas
Madan Ram Becomes a Self-Reliant Farmer Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana
Earning Over ₹2 Lakh Annual Profit Through Biofloc Fish Farming
Raipur, Oct 2025 : Fish farming is opening new avenues of livelihood and self-reliance in rural areas under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), empowering rural families to move towards economic independence.
Under this initiative, Mr. Madan Ram, a resident of Kulhari Gram Panchayat in Ambikapur development block, utilized 30 decimals of his farmland to construct a fish pond using the modern Biofloc technique. The pond is built entirely on scientific principles, equipped with advanced facilities such as Biofloc sheets, oxygen machines, submersible pumps, and generators to maintain water quality.
Government Subsidy for Fish Farming as a Viable Business
Mr. Madan Ram shared that the total cost of constructing the Biofloc pond was ₹14 lakh, of which he received a 60% subsidy — ₹8.4 lakh — under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. He explained that this technology ensures faster fish growth and higher yields. The pond is completely covered with Biofloc sheets, maintaining water quality and temperature, thus creating an ideal environment for fish development.
He added that he approached the Fisheries Department for guidance, where he received full technical support and training. Previously, his agricultural income was limited, but now, through fish farming, he earns a net profit of around ₹2 lakh annually.
Sustainable and Profitable Fish Farming
Mr. Madan Ram further mentioned, “Initially, I had to purchase fish seed, but now the fish breed naturally within the pond. This has reduced costs and increased profits.” Expressing gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, he said, “Compared to traditional farming, fish farming offers higher returns. The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana has given us a golden opportunity to become self-reliant.”
Insurance Coverage and Self-Employment Benefits
The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana was launched to bring a “Blue Revolution” in the fisheries sector. Its goals include increasing production, doubling exports, and creating employment opportunities. The scheme provides fishers and fish farmers with infrastructure, equipment, and financial assistance, along with insurance coverage for accidental death, disability, or hospitalization.
By providing subsidies on loans and encouraging fish farming as a sustainable business, the government is opening new opportunities for farmers, youth, and self-help groups in rural areas. Through Biofloc-based fish farming, rural entrepreneurs like Madan Ram are now playing a key role in strengthening the local economy and advancing towards true self-reliance.
