Kolkata Doctor Found Dead Under Mysterious Circumstances; Police Launch Probe
Kolkata, Oct 2025 : A 37-year-old doctor from Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital died under mysterious circumstances on Sunday night, police said on Monday. The deceased, identified as Dr. Subhajit Acharya, was a resident of Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district.
According to police sources, Acharya’s family has alleged that he had been under severe mental strain due to mounting work pressure at the government hospital. However, they have not yet lodged any formal complaint with the police regarding his death.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and begun a detailed investigation. “A case of unnatural death has been registered. We are examining all possible angles,” said a senior North 24 Parganas police officer.
Preliminary reports suggest that Acharya was with his wife, Dr. Aindrila Roy, a medical officer at Basirhat District Hospital, at their Madhyamgram residence on Sunday evening. Around 10 p.m., the couple had dinner together, and everything appeared normal. Later, around midnight, Acharya reportedly complained of uneasiness and said he needed immediate medical attention.
He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Dr. Roy told the police that her husband had taken an excessive dose of medication the previous night and had been suffering from extreme stress and depression related to his work.
The body has been sent to Barasat Hospital for post-mortem examination, and the exact cause of death will be determined after the autopsy report is received. Police said they are also verifying whether Acharya was undergoing any treatment for psychological distress.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the mental health challenges faced by doctors, particularly those working in high-pressure public hospitals.
Notably, this is not the first tragedy to hit R.G. Kar Medical College. On August 9 last year, the body of a postgraduate intern was found inside the college’s seminar hall, sparking outrage and nationwide protests by doctors and civil groups. In that case, the accused, Sanjay Roy, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court, but the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is still probing the “larger conspiracy” behind the incident.
The latest death has revived painful memories for the medical fraternity and prompted fresh concerns over workplace stress and systemic neglect in the healthcare sector.
