Shreyas Iyer Stable After Spleen Injury, Discharged from Sydney Hospital
New Delhi, Nov 2025 : India batter Shreyas Iyer, who suffered a serious abdominal injury during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, has been declared stable and discharged from a Sydney hospital, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday.
Iyer sustained the injury after an awkward fall while attempting a catch during Australia’s innings. The impact caused a laceration to his spleen accompanied by internal bleeding, prompting an immediate medical response. The bleeding was swiftly controlled with a minor procedure, and Iyer subsequently underwent further medical management to stabilise his condition.
In its statement, the BCCI confirmed that the cricketer is “stable and recovering well,” with medical teams in both Australia and India satisfied with his progress. “The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” the board said.
The BCCI also extended its appreciation to the doctors overseeing Iyer’s treatment, specifically acknowledging Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney and Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India for their expertise and care. Iyer will continue to remain in Sydney for follow-up evaluations and will be allowed to return to India only once he is certified fit to travel.
“The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to the medical teams in Sydney and India for ensuring Shreyas received the best possible treatment. He will stay in Sydney for further consultations and return home when he is deemed fit to fly,” the board added.
On Thursday, Iyer took to social media to thank his supporters for their messages and prayers during his recovery. “I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day. I’m deeply grateful for all the kind wishes and support — it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” he wrote.
Iyer’s absence is expected to be monitored closely by team management, with his return timeline dependent on medical clearance in the coming weeks.
