Pope Leo Urges Immediate Ceasefire, Humanitarian Corridors in Sudan

Vatican City, Nov 2025 : Pope Leo issued a strong humanitarian appeal, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the opening of safe corridors in Sudan amid worsening violence. Speaking during his weekly Angelus address in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope said he was “deeply saddened” by reports of brutal atrocities in Al-Fasher, Darfur.

He condemned the “indiscriminate violence against women and children, attacks on defenseless civilians, and serious obstacles to humanitarian action,” stressing that such suffering was “unacceptable.” The Pope urged the international community to act “decisively and generously” to support relief efforts.

His remarks came as the UN human rights office reported that hundreds of civilians and unarmed fighters may have been killed when the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces captured Al-Fasher late last month. The takeover followed an 18-month siege that forced thousands to flee, leaving the region in deep crisis.

Pope Leo also expressed concern over rising tensions in Tanzania, where clashes following recent national elections have resulted in multiple casualties. He called on all parties to reject violence and “follow the path of dialogue” to restore peace and stability.
