Japan And India Agrees Towards Establishing Direct Yen-Rupee Settlements.
New Delhi; July 2026: During the bilateral summit (Japan-India) in New Delhi between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as expected, it has been well decided that both the QUAD members are going to bolster the business & economic architecture by taking pivotal steps in implementing a local-currency settlement scheme that would enable direct yen-rupee transactions, bypassing the US dollar.
Moreover, this initiative is expected to reduce companies’ foreign-exchange and remittance costs. Japan’s Ministry of Finance aims to sign a memorandum of cooperation with the Reserve Bank of India during fiscal 2026 to promote the use of local currencies in bilateral transactions. International payments are typically routed through major Western financial institutions known as correspondent banks. For transactions between countries using different currencies, the US dollar normally serves as the intermediary currency.
Under the bilateral initiative, Japanese non-residents would be allowed to open accounts at Indian banks in India, enabling financial institutions in both countries to settle payments directly without using the US dollar. The arrangement would eliminate the need for dollar conversion, lowering foreign-exchange and transaction costs. It would also shorten settlement times by removing the need to route payments through third-country banks.
The dollar-free system is expected to be available to major commercial banks of the two countries. By making cross-border transactions easier, Tokyo hopes to support Japanese companies expanding into India and encourage greater private-sector investment.
Earlier, Japan has concluded a similar local-currency settlement framework with Indonesia in 2019. Bilateral transactions under the arrangement reached the equivalent of $7.7 billion in 2025. Japan’s Ministry of Finance is also studying a comparable mechanism with Malaysia.
Japan and India first referred to currency cooperation in their 2025 Japan-India Joint Vision. Its inclusion in the summit joint statement would amount to a substantive upgrade.
