Tamil Nadu Launches Special Medical Camp and New Emergency Care Registry for Journalists.

Chennai, Nov 2025 : A special medical camp for journalists was inaugurated today at the Chennai Connemara Hall, jointly organised by the Department of Information & Public Relations, the Directorate of Medical & Public Health Services, and the Apollo Hospitals Group.

The event was inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister for Tamil Development and Information, Thiru M.P. Saminathan, Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Thiru Ma. Subramanian, and Hon’ble Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, Thiru P.K. Sekarbabu, by lighting the traditional lamp.

During the event, the Ministers also launched the Trauma and Emergency Care Initiative Registry (TAEI Registry 2.0) under the Health Department. Additionally, under the Journalists Welfare Fund Scheme, a medical assistance cheque of ₹50,000 was handed over to the son of journalist Mr. Senthilnan.

Wide Range of Medical Services for Journalists

Speaking to the media, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian said:

“Today’s special medical camp has provided journalists with access to a wide array of healthcare facilities. Departments including general medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, ENT, orthopaedics, gynaecology, dental care, traditional Indian medicine, ECG, X-ray, echo, and ultrasound participated in the camp.”

The Minister added that as per the vision of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, the Department of Information and Public Relations has been consistently carrying out several welfare initiatives for journalists over the years.

Enhanced Health Insurance and Welfare Benefits

As announced in the 2021–22 State Budget, accredited journalists are now eligible for the government’s Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS), with an annual coverage of ₹72,000 without any premium. So far, 1,414 accredited journalists have benefited.

The State Government has also:

  • Increased journalists’ pension from ₹10,000 to ₹12,000 per month
  • Raised the solatium under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund from ₹3 lakh to ₹10 lakh
  • Introduced multiple additional welfare measures

“These improvements show the Chief Minister’s deep concern for the welfare of journalists,” the Minister said.

Launch of TAEI Registry 2.0 for Emergency Care

The Trauma and Emergency Care Initiative (TAEI), a major healthcare programme of Tamil Nadu, aims to strengthen emergency care services across the state.

Key features include:

  • Upgraded emergency care units in 113 designated TAEI hospitals, including
    • 36 medical college hospitals
    • 5 district headquarters hospitals
    • 31 district hospitals
    • 41 sub-district hospitals
  • Use of modern infrastructure, equipment, and trained personnel
  • Dedicated trauma, burn care, poisoning, child emergency, accident, and stroke care units

The newly launched TAEI Registry 2.0, a digital platform accessible via computers and mobile devices, will:

  • Record details of patients admitted to emergency departments
  • Integrate data from 108 emergency ambulances
  • Improve treatment response times and continuity of care

Dignitaries Present

The event was attended by Chennai Mayor R. Priya, Deputy Mayor Mahesh Kumar, senior officials from various government departments, representatives from health agencies, and a large gathering of journalists.

The function concluded with a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to journalist welfare and strengthened emergency medical services across Tamil Nadu.
