Women’s World Cup Hero Richa Ghosh Appointed DSP, Felicitated at Eden Gardens

Kolkata, Nov 2025 : West Bengal’s rising cricket star and Women’s World Cup-winning wicketkeeper-batter, Richa Ghosh, was on Saturday appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) by the state government. The announcement came during a vibrant felicitation ceremony at Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens, personally presided over by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

During the event, the Chief Minister handed over the official appointment letter to Ghosh, recognizing her outstanding contribution to Indian cricket. Alongside the DSP appointment, Ghosh was conferred the prestigious Banga Bhushan award by the state government in honor of her remarkable performance in the Women’s World Cup.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joined the celebrations by presenting Ghosh with a golden bat and a golden ball. In addition, she received a cheque of Rs 34 lakhs, symbolically matching the 34 runs she scored in the final of the Women’s World Cup. The cheque was handed over by former Indian cricket captain and CAB president, Sourav Ganguly, who praised her crucial innings.

“Richa’s role at number six in the final was the toughest. She had fewer balls to face and a high asking rate, yet she played skillfully and changed the course of the match,” Ganguly said. Both the Chief Minister and Ganguly expressed confidence that Ghosh has the potential to captain the Indian women’s cricket team in the future.

Speaking at the event, Richa Ghosh shared insights into her preparation for high-pressure matches. “During net practice, I always set targets for myself. It helps me stay focused. I enjoy challenges and love playing crucial roles to secure victories for my team,” she said.

The Chief Minister also took a moment to praise Sourav Ganguly’s contribution to Indian cricket, expressing her wish to see him lead the International Cricket Council (ICC) one day. “He was an outstanding captain and has managed cricket administration exceptionally. I believe he deserves to head the ICC, and nothing can stop him from achieving it,” Banerjee said.

The ceremony highlighted not only Richa Ghosh’s cricketing excellence but also the recognition of her as a role model for young athletes across the country. Her appointment as DSP reflects West Bengal’s commitment to honoring sports achievements and inspiring the next generation.

The event drew widespread attention, celebrating the synergy of sports and public service, and reinforcing the message that dedication on the field can translate into opportunities and recognition off it.
