US Senate Passes Funding Bill to End Record 41-Day Government Shutdown

Washington, Nov 2025 : In a major breakthrough, the US Senate on Monday approved a comprehensive funding package designed to end the nation’s longest-ever government shutdown, now in its 41st day. The vote marks the most significant step yet toward restoring normal operations across federal agencies that have been crippled for more than a month.

The bipartisan measure now moves to the House of Representatives, where a vote is expected later this week. If approved, the bill will head to President Donald Trump, who Senate Republican leaders say is prepared to sign it immediately.

The legislation funds the government through January 2026 and allocates full-year budgets to several essential departments. It also guarantees the reinstatement of pay and positions for thousands of employees who were furloughed or forced to work without pay throughout the shutdown.

The agreement emerged after tense negotiations and a key Sunday procedural vote in which eight Democrats crossed party lines to advance the bill. On Monday, the Senate voted 60–40 to formally reopen the government.

A central element of the compromise is a Republican commitment to hold a separate vote by mid-December on extending healthcare tax benefits — an issue Democrats have fought hard to include in the funding bill itself. The decision to postpone the healthcare vote drew criticism from some progressive lawmakers and activists who demanded stronger action.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer voiced his frustration, saying the Republican bill “fails to offer any meaningful solution” to what he described as “Trump’s health care crisis.” Schumer voted against the final bill but acknowledged that reopening the government was urgently necessary.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has recalled lawmakers to Washington in anticipation of a swift vote. Should the bill pass, the shutdown — which has disrupted federal services, delayed payments, affected airport operations, and slowed economic activity — will formally come to an end.

The resolution offers relief to millions of Americans affected by the prolonged impasse and signals a temporary return to normalcy, though partisan disagreements over health care and future spending remain far from resolved.
