EAM Jaishankar Meets Canadian FM Anita Anand, Eyes Stronger India-Canada Partnership at G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Ontario, Nov 2025 : External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Niagara, expressing optimism about rebuilding a stronger bilateral partnership between India and Canada.

During their meeting, Jaishankar commended the progress made under the New Roadmap 2025, a joint framework designed to strengthen India-Canada ties across multiple domains. “Delighted to meet with FM Anita Anand of Canada today. Congratulated her on hosting the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Appreciated the progress in implementation of the New Roadmap 2025. Look forward to further rebuilding of our bilateral partnership,” Jaishankar wrote on X on Wednesday.

Jaishankar is in Canada to participate in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with outreach partners, at the invitation of Anita Anand. This visit comes just a month after Anand’s trip to India, where both ministers had agreed on an ambitious cooperation roadmap for bilateral relations. On October 13, Jaishankar and Anand held discussions aimed at “restoring and reinvigorating” the mechanisms necessary to advance the bilateral partnership.

Both ministers emphasized that in the context of global economic uncertainty and rising geopolitical tensions, a robust India-Canada relationship is vital. A joint statement released after the talks noted that the two countries, guided by shared democratic values, rule of law, and a commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity, reached a consensus on the New Roadmap for bilateral relations.

The statement highlighted that reviving this partnership would open avenues for enhanced economic cooperation, strengthen supply chains, and reinforce strategic stability amid shifting global alliances.

Earlier this year, in June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, for a pivotal bilateral discussion aimed at reviving strained ties.

In addition to Canada, Jaishankar held a series of bilateral meetings with foreign counterparts from France, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Germany on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

During his meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, the two sides reviewed the India-France Strategic Partnership and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in multilateral and plurilateral formats. “Took stock of our Strategic Partnership. Discussed deepening our cooperation in multilateral and plurilateral formats,” Jaishankar tweeted.

Jaishankar also met Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, recognizing recent progress in bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, health, and technology. With UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, he reaffirmed the India-UK Vision 2035, aimed at deepening collaboration across key sectors. His discussions with Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul focused on advancing India-EU ties and sharing perspectives on developments in the Middle East, Indo-Pacific, and Afghanistan.

India is participating in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting as an invited partner under Canada’s presidency, alongside countries such as Brazil, Australia, and South Korea. The two-day event emphasizes global security, economic resilience, energy cooperation, and strengthening partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.

In a statement on Monday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that Jaishankar’s visit underscores the country’s commitment to international collaboration. “EAM’s participation in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting reflects India’s continued commitment to working with international partners in addressing global challenges and amplifying the voice of the Global South in international fora,” the statement read.

The External Affairs Minister is expected to continue engaging with counterparts from other participating nations before the formal conclusion of the G7 ministerial sessions in Canada on November 12.
