Red Fort Blast: Dr Umar Mohammad Identified as Car Driver Through DNA Match

New Delhi, Nov 2025 : In a major breakthrough in the Red Fort blast case, investigators have confirmed that Dr Umar Mohammad, a senior faculty member at Al Falah University, Faridabad, was driving the i20 car that exploded near Red Fort on November 10, killing eight people and injuring at least 20 others.

According to Delhi Police sources, DNA test results conclusively established Umar’s identity, matching 100 percent with samples collected from his mother and brother. DNA traces were extracted from bone fragments, teeth, and bits of clothing recovered from the mangled wreckage of the vehicle.

The powerful explosion, which occurred around 6:52 p.m., sent shockwaves across the national capital, raising alarm over the security breach near one of India’s most iconic monuments. The blast triggered immediate high-alert measures across New Delhi and surrounding areas.

In the aftermath, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) officially took over the probe from the Delhi Police’s Special Cell. NIA teams have sealed the blast site and are conducting detailed forensic and chemical analysis of the debris, including explosive residues, electronic components, and vehicle fragments.

IEDs and a Trail of Explosives

Preliminary forensic analysis indicates that the car was packed with high-grade improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Investigators are tracing the source of the explosives and analyzing Dr Umar’s digital footprint and movements in the days leading up to the explosion.

Police officials revealed that Umar left his residence in Faridabad earlier that day, telling colleagues he had a personal engagement in Delhi. Investigators are examining whether he acted alone or as part of a larger terror network.

The blast took place just hours after Jammu and Kashmir Police recovered nearly 3,000 kg of explosives from two residential buildings in Faridabad — a connection that investigators are now exploring.

₹20 Lakh Raised to Fund the Blast

Major revelations have surfaced about the funding network behind the conspiracy. Delhi Police sources disclosed that Dr Umar, along with Dr Muzammil, Dr Adeel, and Dr Shaheen, had jointly raised nearly ₹20 lakh in cash to execute the plot.

Investigations show that the group purchased over 20 quintals of NPK fertiliser, worth around ₹3 lakh, from Gurugram, Nuh, and nearby regions. The fertiliser is believed to have been used in manufacturing the IEDs that caused the explosion near Red Fort.

Sources further hinted at internal conflicts within the group, particularly a money dispute between Umar and Muzammil. To maintain secrecy and coordinate operations, Umar reportedly created a private Signal group with a handful of members to discuss logistics, targets, and fund movements.

Last Moments Before the Blast

One of the most critical findings in the investigation revealed that just minutes before the explosion, Dr Umar visited a mosque in Old Delhi, where he stayed for around ten minutes before heading towards Red Fort. CCTV footage and local intelligence inputs are now being examined to determine whether he met accomplices or received final instructions there.

DNA Confirms Direct Involvement

Adding to the mounting evidence, forensic experts recovered a severed leg from near the driver’s seat of the burnt-out i20. DNA testing confirmed it belonged to Dr Umar Mohammad, conclusively establishing his presence and direct involvement in the terror act.

NIA Steps In

Following these developments, the NIA has widened its investigation, focusing on Umar’s connections, funding channels, and academic network at Al Falah University. A senior investigator said, “We are examining whether the accused were part of a wider terror module with links across Delhi, Haryana, and Jammu and Kashmir.”

As the probe deepens, the Red Fort blast is shaping up to be one of the most significant terror investigations in recent years — exposing a web of radicalisation, professional infiltration, and cross-state collaboration that had quietly taken root in India’s heartland.
