New Pond Becomes Lifeline for Village: Radharaman Nagar Revives with Water, Farming, and Hope

Raipur, Nov 2025 : For the residents of Radharaman Nagar under Sonvarsha Gram Panchayat, the newly constructed pond has proved to be nothing short of a blessing. Once, villagers had to walk miles during summers to fetch even a few drops of water. Today, the same pond not only quenches their thirst but also sustains farming and livelihoods. This transformation became possible through the construction of a new pond under the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA Scheme, built at a cost of ₹12.80 lakh.

A New Chapter in Water Security

For years, Radharaman Nagar faced an acute water crisis. The groundwater level had plunged to nearly 450 feet, causing handpumps to dry up and forcing villagers to struggle for water every summer. To address this, the Sonvarsha Gram Panchayat built a new pond near an old quarry to conserve and store rainwater. Today, this pond stores monsoon water and ensures year-round water availability for domestic use, livestock, and irrigation.

Technically Sound Construction – Every Drop Preserved

Special attention was given to the technical design during construction. The pond’s embankment was built with the right width and height to safely retain rainwater and prevent erosion or overflow. Its depth was increased to allow long-term water storage. The entire project was implemented under the MGNREGA scheme with active participation from the Gram Panchayat, which not only promoted water conservation but also generated local employment during construction.

A Milestone Toward Transformation

The pond has completely changed the face of the village. Once dry and barren fields now retain soil moisture, and agricultural productivity has risen noticeably. Smiles have returned to farmers’ faces as their hard work is now bearing fruit.

New Livelihood Source – Fish Farming Boosts Income

Beyond water conservation, the pond has opened new avenues of income. Villagers Babu Singh, Jeet Narayan (Job Card No. 001/29), Ekka Prasad, and Ravishankar (Job Card No. 001/79) jointly released 3,000 fish seeds into the pond. They now maintain the pond regularly and earn additional income from fish farming, which has improved their living standards. The pond water is also used for irrigation, ensuring greenery throughout the year.

Voices of the Villagers

Resident Babu Singh shared, “Earlier, summers were extremely difficult as we had no water. Now, we not only have enough for drinking and daily use but also for irrigation. Fish farming gives us extra income. This pond is nothing less than an Amrit Sarovar (lake of nectar) for us.”

A Model for Sustainable Development

Today, the pond in Sonvarsha–Radharaman Nagar stands as a model of water conservation, storage, and livelihood promotion. It demonstrates how collective effort, guided by technical knowledge, can turn challenges like water scarcity into opportunities. The initiative by Sonvarsha Gram Panchayat has become a model of water management in the Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district, inspiring other villages to follow suit.

Every Drop Holds Hope

The new pond in Radharaman Nagar is not merely a reservoir—it has become a symbol of prosperity. It has ensured water security, created jobs, and boosted agriculture and fish farming. This story proves that with the right direction and effort, even a single drop of water can drive change—and this pond stands as a living witness to that transformation, leading the village toward self-reliance.
