KGBV girls leading a silent revolution in sports
Lucknow, Nov 2025 : Under the guidance of Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh, the daughters of Kasturba Gandhi Girls Schools (KGBV) sparked a silent revolution in sports this year, filling the entire state with pride and surprise. In the year 2025–26 school sports competitions, 504 KGBV girls competed as a single unit, proved their strength in 22 sports disciplines, and made history by winning 50 medals including five gold, 10 silver, and 35 bronze medals.

The performance was so significant that 24 girls have been selected for state level teams, where they received 10 days of residential training across different districts. The selection process is still in progress, and more names are expected to be added. These achievements show that KGBV girls are now ready to build a new identity not only in academics but across every area of sports.
Sandeep Singh, Basic Education Minister, Uttar Pradesh, “The courage, discipline, and commitment with which the daughters of Kasturba Gandhi Girls Schools created history by winning 50 medals in the sports field is a confident picture of a ‘New UP’. We have pledged to provide every daughter with opportunities, facilities, and a safe environment. Today their success is visible on the field. These daughters are not just playing as a hobby but in the coming time they are going to give Uttar Pradesh a new identity at the national level in sports.”

This year, the talented girls of KGBV participated in major competitions such as hockey, football, cricket, judo, boxing, taekwondo, kabaddi, kho kho, wrestling, athletics, yoga, table tennis, karate, volleyball, handball, basketball, gatka, thang ta, kurrash, and the Nehru Hockey Cup. They girls did not just mark their presence on each field, but left a decisive impact through their agility, skill, technique, and mental strength.
Last year in 2024–25, 222 girls participated and won 23 medals including eight gold, 10 silver, and 5 bronze. This year, 504 girls delivered a powerful performance and won a total of 50 medals. This reflects a doubling in participation and more than six fold growth in achievements. It is worth highlighting that the girls football team secured second place last year, and this year too their performance in several districts deeply impressed the selectors.
The consistent efforts of the KGBV network wardens, sports teachers, trainers, and management team shaped this achievement. The discipline, rigorous practice, and commitment of the girls gave them the confidence that echoed in their words after the victory: “We are not the ones who stop, we are the ones who win”, the girls said.
This achievement of KGBV girls is more than a sports result. It stands as proof of girl empowerment, equal opportunity, and real social change. Today these daughters are becoming an inspiration not only for their own schools but for girls across Uttar Pradesh. Sports have become a new path for confidence, leadership, self reliance, and future opportunities.
Monika Rani, Director General of School Education said,” The active participation of 504 KGBV girls in 22 sports and the excellent achievement of 50 medals proves that if daughters receive proper training, encouragement, and a platform, they can achieve extraordinary success in every field. State level selections, residential training, and increasing participation have strengthened our efforts in girls education and empowerment. These KGBV daughters will become new role models in the sports world in the coming years,”
