Nitish Kumar Resigns, Stakes Claim to Form New NDA Government in Bihar

Patna, Nov 2025 : Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday submitted his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and formally staked claim to form the next National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the state. He arrived at the Raj Bhavan along with senior NDA leaders, including Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Samrat Choudhary, Vijay Kumar Sinha and others.

Kumar presented the Governor with a list of 202 newly elected MLAs supporting the NDA, thereby securing the numbers required to form the new government. Following this, Governor Arif Mohammad Khan invited him to take oath as Chief Minister.

Earlier in the day, Nitish Kumar was unanimously elected the leader of the NDA legislative party in a meeting held at the Central Hall of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. Before this, he was also chosen as the leader of the JD(U) legislative party.

On the BJP’s side, Samrat Choudhary was elected leader of the legislative party, while Vijay Kumar Sinha was chosen as the deputy leader. Both leaders will be sworn in as ministers and are set to serve as Deputy Chief Ministers in the new NDA government.

According to sources, nearly 20 ministers are expected to take oath alongside Nitish Kumar. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 20, at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan. The programme is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., with Governor Arif Mohammad Khan administering the oath at 1:30 p.m.

The event is likely to witness the presence of several high-profile dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states, and senior party leaders.

In view of the anticipated VVIP movement, extensive security measures and traffic restrictions have been implemented along key routes—from Patna Airport to Gandhi Maidan—to ensure smooth arrangements.

Nitish Kumar will be taking the oath at Gandhi Maidan after a gap of ten years. His previous oath-taking ceremonies at this venue were held in 2005, 2010 and 2015. In 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the swearing-in ceremony was conducted at the Raj Bhavan instead.

With political developments moving swiftly, Nitish Kumar is set to begin a new term at the helm of Bihar’s NDA government, backed by a strong legislative mandate and the renewed support of coalition partners.
