Andhra Pradesh to Create Three New Districts, Taking Total to 29

Amaravati, Nov 2025 : The Andhra Pradesh government has approved the creation of three new districts—Markapuram, Madanapalle, and Polavaram—raising the total number of districts in the state to 29. The decision was taken on Tuesday after Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu accepted the recommendations submitted by a Group of Ministers tasked with examining the proposal.

The Cabinet also cleared the formation of five new revenue divisions. These include Nakkapalli in Anakapalli district, Addanki in Prakasam district, Peeleru in the newly created Madanapalle district, Banaganapalle in Nandyala district, and Madakasira in Sri Sathya Sai district. Additionally, a new Peddaharivanam mandal will be carved out of the existing Adoni mandal in Kurnool district.

As per the decision, Rampachodavaram and Chinturu revenue divisions will be brought under the jurisdiction of the proposed Polavaram district, with Rampachodavaram designated as the district headquarters. Markapuram district will be constituted with the Yerragondapalem, Markapuram, Kanigiri, and Giddaluru revenue divisions, while the Madanapalle district will include the Madanapalle, Punganuru, and Peeleru revenue divisions.

Speaking earlier, Chief Minister Naidu had emphasised that the reorganisation of districts must reflect public aspirations and enhance administrative effectiveness. He noted that the problems that emerged during the previous government’s district restructuring must be resolved without creating new administrative or logistical challenges.

To address these issues, the state government formed a seven-member ministerial subcommittee on district reorganisation on July 22 this year. The panel was tasked with reviewing the existing structure, identifying gaps, and suggesting corrective measures.

Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the state was left with 13 districts. In 2022, the previous YSRCP government increased this number to 26. However, the TDP-led coalition had criticised the manner in which the districts were reorganised, calling the process unscientific and inconsistent with the wishes of local residents. In its election manifesto, the coalition had promised to undertake a systematic restructuring of districts and revenue divisions.

Naidu had also directed the committee to align district boundaries with future constituency delimitation. In addition, he called for a thorough study on the administrative implications for mandals likely to be affected by the Polavaram project. The reorganisation, he said, must account for future population shifts, submerged areas, and the emerging administrative needs of affected communities.

With the latest decision, the state government aims to create a more efficient, people-centric administrative structure that can support equitable development across Andhra Pradesh.
